Your driver/guide will pick you up from your Riad/hotel in Marrakech at 07:30 am. The private Telouet & Ait Benhaddou day trip from Marrakech offers an interesting experience as you will learn about how the Berber tribes in the Atlas Mountains shaped the history of Morocco. We will initially have a nice drive through the High-Atlas Mountains offering breathtaking views with its snow-capped and lush valleys.
We will cross the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2260 m), then follow a secondary path that will take us to the heart of the High-Atlas Mountains where we can see the dramatic Telouet castle from afar. It was built by the Glaoui Family in 1860 before it was further expanded in later years. The strategic location it had along the former route of the caravans from the Sahara over the Atlas Mountains to Marrakech brought wealth and power to the Glawi family.
The Telouet Kasbah (fortress) is also called the Glaoui Palace and despite it is crumbling but major restorations have been taking place since 2010. We will spend the time meandering around this unique masterpiece of architecture before continuing on the track further south to the UNESCO listed Ait Benhaddou Village.
The Kser of Ait Benhaddou has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and it played a strategic position along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. The site has been used as a backrop for shooting many films such as The Man Who Would Be King (1975), Jesus of Nazareth (1977), Gladiator (2000), Son of God (2014), Queen of the Desert (2015) and much more.
